(See: the events of Trauma Team; it's not a major event in Derek's background, which is why the Trauma Team page isn't listed here)

[Personality]

Derek Stiles is one of those guys that seems like he has two different sides to him, depending on where you meet him. Not in a bad way or anything, it's more of a professional sort of difference. Outside of surgery, Derek is a pretty easy going guy. He generally isn't bothered by small things, and he gets along well with other people. In fact, his favorite part of being a doctor is being able to talk with his patients and meet them face to face. For someone that's known globally as a skilled surgeon, he's really a pretty normal guy. He gets nervous and self-conscious around large groups if he's supposed to give a presentation or appear on TV, he doesn't like doing his paperwork, and is even rather disorganized when it comes to that part of being a doctor (as in, he has difficulty remembering deadlines due to doing other things. He's a busy doctor, okay). He's also rather clueless when it comes to understanding women, as most guys probably are, but in Derek's case, it's kind of special. He's very complimentary, usually in a joking around manner, of some of the nurses (usually the older nurse, Mary Fulton) that have helped him on operations (ex. "I couldn't have done it without my lovely assistant"), but as soon as that behavior is reversed and a woman is complimenting him, he becomes flustered and embarrassed. Oh, he also hates puzzles because he's not very good at them. This is important, okay. Puzzles totally help with operations and stuff for some reason, but he's bad at them.

Another thing that people might find odd about him is that, despite being well-known for his skill as a surgeon, Derek is a very modest guy. He usually refuses to take full credit for anything, since he isn't working on his own, he has researchers and nurses and assistants helping him, and they're all equally as responsible for Caduceus' success treating GUILT and related diseases as he is. In fact, when people insist that he take more credit for things, or insist upon complimenting him, Derek tends to get flustered. Dealing with compliments is awkward, okay. He also tends to space out from time to time, though that usually happens more in slow times than in times where he's needed for an operation or something. Which is good, because who wants a doctor that's spacing out operating on you? He's also usually a polite person, but obviously, being as easy going as he is, he can and does loosen up around people easily (unless he's stressed out about something, naturally, or something of that sort). He'll even tend to be polite to people when they're making him uncomfortable, so long as that person isn't someone like Tyler Chase, another doctor at Caduceus that often pokes fun at Derek or makes questionable remarks. That said, if the person is saying things that are, well, not something Derek wants to hear, or he's not in a great mood, he can snap at them, but that's very, very rare. Unless you're talking about GUILT being a good thing, but that falls under things Derek doesn't want to hear. Because it's stupid. I mean, he's even calm and, well, gentle when talking to a patient that at first flat-out told him she was upset he saved her life. That's another thing about Derek is that sometimes he's rather bad at taking jokes, depending on what the joke is. He likes being friendly and joking around, don't get me wrong, but if you do something like pretend to flat out ignore him after he gets back from a two month long trip in Africa, he'll be kind of pissed.

As a surgeon, though, Derek is pretty different from the easy going guy he is outside the operating room. Learning from previous mistakes he made as a rookie surgeon, Derek is usually very thorough with his examinations, and he manages to keep calm and do his job, even when faced with unknown new diseases that don't really have specified treatment methods. Even if he's nervous before an operation (due to it being televised or something), he will focus on the task at hand, even managing to ignore the things that were stressing him out beforehand when he's in the middle of an operation (camera flashes, etc.). He's very stubborn and determined, as well, and though this can be negative at times, when it comes to operations, it means he's not going to give up on the patient. Or as the voice clips will tell you, he "WON'T LET YOU DIE!" because he's "A DOCTOR." Despite how difficult his job probably seems, Derek somehow remains optimistic, not just outside of the O.R., but in it, as well. Every disease has a cure, and he's sure to find a way to save the patient and cure the disease, because his father died of a previously incurable disease in the past, and he doesn't want anyone else to have to hear that their relative can't be saved. He really does like helping people. That's the whole reason he became a doctor, even though he hates paperwork and oversleeps sometimes and wasn't the top of his class in med school and is pretty much a normal guy. He just really wants to help people and make their lives better. Because Derek has a huge sense of responsibility, as a doctor, he places the well-being of his patients above all else, both in surgery and out of surgery, and no matter who the patient may be. Derek is very nondiscriminatory when it comes to helping patients; if they need his help, he will give it, no matter if it's someone that just kidnapped a person they thought was on their side, a researcher at a bioterrorism organization, or anything else that they could be. And even if they do fall into one of those negative categories, Derek will still argue for their rights as a patient and for any interrogation or whatever might need to be done to occur after the patient is deemed strong enough, not immediately after an operation.

HOWEVER, because he's determined and all that, this can lead to some of Derek's... less desirable characteristics. While he's more than willing to share the praise with everyone when successful, when he fails, Derek takes all the blame. Not because everyone else is blaming him, but because he's blaming himself. If something goes wrong, in his mind, it's obviously his fault. He has a huge sense of responsibility, which, while a good thing to have as a doctor, can be ruined when something bad happens. He takes it all way too personally, and, in fact, this has caused him to temporarily lose the Healing Touch and faith in his operation skills before. Though Derek being stubborn in the O.R. and determined to save lives is a good thing, this also bleeds out into how he normally behaves, as well; if, for instance, he's been insulted by someone, depending on how bad it was, Derek can be reluctant and unwilling to immediately patch things up with that person. Perfectly normal, though, really. Finally, though he is modest about his skills, having the Healing Touch can cause him to be overconfident at times. This does not happen that much after being unable to save Emilio, but the Healing Touch can make Derek overestimate how many patients he's feasibly able to treat, which kind of sets him up for failure if things go wrong. It feeds right back into him taking everything too personally and blaming himself.

[Specialties/Abilities]
The Healing Touch: a skill few surgeons possess and is believed to be a gift passed down from the Greek god of medicine, Asclepius, but it's not really some magical power that it's made out to be. The Healing Touch can take different forms depending on the surgeon (for example, causing an increase in a patient's vitals whenever something is done correctly), but in Derek's case, it involves concentrating extremely hard on the task at hand, which allows him to move extremely fast and finish tasks quicker than otherwise possible because it seems like he's slowing down time. Nope, he's just moving really quickly. However, Derek can only use the Healing Touch every so often (once per operation in-game); it's not something he can just invoke at will, as it causes strain on his body, and he can become tired or black out if he hasn't used it in a while.

Aside from the Healing Touch, though, Derek is an extremely accomplished surgeon. While his specialty is dealing with GUILT and anything connected to it (PGS, Neo-GUILT, etc.), he is also able to accurately perform 'routine' surgeries (fixing broken bones, throat surgery, aneurysm surgery, etc.), as well as operations for research purposes (mostly to research GUILT).

[Affection] So long as there's reason for it, I'd say most things are allowed? Derek would be extremely awkward about a lot of things unless there's substantial CR behind it, though. He's probably not the type of guy to turn down a hug from friends, I'd say.

[Fighting] He can't fight. He might get angry at other people if they are being jerks (read: bioterrorists or purposely hurting other people), which might provoke fights, but. Aside from situations like that, he wouldn't provoke fights, he would not join fights, he just. He can't fight.

[Other Permissions] Most things are probably okay, just ask me first.
